Nintendo Wii
The Nintendo Wii is all about “we”. It’s the first gaming machine that caters not only to the button-mashing young men who were raised on Madden games, but also to people of all ages. It truly is a video game system that everyone can have fun with. Because of the simple design of the controller and the revolutionary sensory system, playing a video game is as simple as swinging your arms.
The Wii System comes bundled with Wii Sports, which has five mini-games including bowling, baseball, tennis, golf and boxing. Want to play baseball? Just hold the controller in your hand like a bat and swing at those fastballs. A sensory bar on top of the TV detects when and how fast you swing the controller. The player on the screen mimics exactly what you do. In a matter of seconds, grandma and grandpa or the kiddies will be hitting homers just like the video game addict in the family.
Nintendo has made many simple, fun games for the casual gamer, but they haven’t forgotten their hard-core gamers either. Because of add-ons to the basic Wii controller, Nintendo can design games that are more involved and intricate. Games like Madden NFL 08, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption are deep enough to satisfy those who like to spend hours and hours playing their vids. And with the new online functionality, gamers can download those classic Nintendo games like Super Mario Bros and Donkey Kong for just a few dollars.
Nintendo needed to do something to differentiate itself from the Playstation 3 and the Xbox and they believed that opening up their audience would do it. With the Wii, Nintendo is getting the whole family in the action and making video games fun to play again.
