Are drifting tires the same as street tires?
Yes. The tires used for drifting are the same as those used for street. The sanctioning bodies require that you run DOT spec tires. Different organizations have tread rating requirements that have to do with tire wear. In some series it’s okay to run an R compound tire while in others it is not. In any case, all the tires required to compete are tires that you can buy for street use.

For drifting, is an automatic transmission preferable to a manual?
You can drift with either transmission but most prefer using a manual transmission. One of the easiest ways to initiate a drift is to do so with a clutch kick, which is only possible in a manual transmission car. This along with the ability to maintain better vehicle control is why drifters have sticks in their rides.

How are the brakes set up in a pro drifting car?
In most pro drifting cars, the brakes are upgraded with the usual big brake packages that you see out in the market. Most have 4 or 6 piston calipers and run larger rotors that are usually slotted or cross-drilled. Kits from Brembo, Endless, Stoptech, and Project U are the norm for most of the competitors. I must note that the brakes are not a major focal point on drift cars. At times, some competition rides will use stock calipers and pair them up with upgraded pads and rotors. But for the most part, the top level cars usually run the big brake units.
