Danny Popp Invited to the OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational
With his win at the 2011 Motorstate Challenge, Danny Popp has received an invitation to the 2011 OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational. As OPTIMA eCare Manager, Bill Howell pointed out, last year's OUSCI winner, Mark Stielow, also punched his ticket to Nevada by winning the Motorstate Challenge. Will Popp be able to duplicate Stielow's success? Consider the following-
Popp is a seven-time SCCA Solo/ProSolo National Champion and five-time NASA Roadrace/Time Trial National Champion. He has won ten Divisional SCCA Championships, 18 Regional Championships and one NASA Regional Championship. He has competed in the Tire Rack One Lap of America three times, finishing as high as third place overall in 2005. He is also a two-time record-holder for the Tire Rack OLOA skid pad and holds NASA track records for the TTU class at Putnam Park, the VIR North Course and Mid-Ohio, where he also holds track records for TTS ST1. The 2011 OUSCI won't be his first foray into "Ultimate" competitions either, as he previsouly won the Grassroots Motorsports 2007 Ultimate Track Car Shootout.
That resume is impressive enough, but the fact that Popp is bringing a 2006 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 to the OUSCI stacks the deck in his favor even more. As one would expect with someone with that racing pedigree, Popp's ZO6 has received considerable upgrades to the suspension, brakes and engine, which now puts out about 575 horsepower at the rear wheels.
Here is the kicker to the whole thing. As one might guess, Danny is a fairly competitive guy and as we've witnessed from previous OUSCI competitions, many of the competitors really go nuts with their cars, after they receive an invitation to our event (the name Telly Violetto comes to mind). We expect that by the time Popp's Corvette shows up at SEMA this year, it will likely be even more competitive than it was five months prior. The question that always surrounds any vehicle headed for SEMA is, will it also be completely sorted out and capable of runing at 10/10ths for the 2011 OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational?
Some may already wonder if Popp the man to beat at this year's competiton. That remains to be seen, but whomever intends on taking him on had better bring their "A" game.
