OPTIMA® Faceoff Preview- Damion Campbell's 1963 Pontiac LeMans

Damion_Campbell_Pontiac.JPGToday's preview of the field for the 2013 OPTIMA® Faceoff at Road America focuses on Damion Campbell's 1963 Pontiac LeMans. Damion's roots are in drag racing, but he wanted to try something different and do it in a car that is somewhat off the well-beaten Pro-Touring path. What you see is the end result of a full year's worth of thrashing. The Pontiac was obviously built with the intent to run on a road course and that is supported by the presence of Wilwood brakes and shocks from RideTech, but that only tells part of the story.

Damion's Le Mans has a complete tube chassis, which incorporated parts from Art Morrison's catalog. Poncho purists may cringe, but the third and current engine in Damion's ride is a carbureted 383 built by AMS Racing in West Allis, Wisconsin, which produces 530 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque. The green exterior hue was laid down by Scott Lustig from Nagal Autobody in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Damion's Poncho now rolls on Nitto rubber, with 275/40 series tires up front and 315/35 in the back, surrounding a killer set of 17-inch Rushforth wheels.

Damion is doing his best to get the LeMans dialed in before the Faceoff and has already tracked the car at the Heidt's Performance Car Challenge at the Autobahn Country Club earlier this month, running in the upper-half of the field on the road course. He also hopes to get in some additional track time at Blackhawk Farms before heading up to Road America next month. In the meantime, Campbell drives the car on a daily basis, sorting out any additional bugs that may surface.
