(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) – Lawrenceburg native J.R. Todd will get to compete for a NHRA Top Fuel championship this fall.
Todd was again driving the OPTIMA Batteries Top Fuel dragster for Team Kalitta during the NHRA Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, the world’s most prestigious drag race, at Lucas Oil Raceway Park in Indianapolis on Saturday and Sunday. He did not win the event, but the former NHRA Rookie of the Year did clinch a spot in the Countdown for the Championship.
In qualified that was delayed from Friday night until Saturday due to rain, Todd qualified for his first Traxxas Shootout. However, he was narrowly defeated in the first round by eventual winner Antron Brown.
Todd came back to make a great run in the evening session, but luck was not on his side as he was seeded fifth and matched up once again against Brown. Despite a good .052 light reaction time, Todd smoked the tires on his dragster just before the finish line.
“The OPTIMA Batteries team just struggled in the heat this weekend,” said Todd. “Thankful to clinch our Countdown spot, and we will look forward to a better effort in Indianapolis.”
Todd is seeded eighth for the Countdown for the Championship, the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series’ version of the playoffs.
He will compete in six playoff races starting with the NHRA Carolina Nationals in Charlotte September 16-18. The circuit will head to St. Louis (Sept. 23-25), Reading (Sept. 29-Oct. 2), Dallas (Oct. 13-16), and Las Vegas (Oct. 27-30) before a champion is crowned at the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California on November 10 through 13.
