Event 4 - Race to the Clouds at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
After finishing up at Nürburgring, the new OPTIMA® YELLOWTOP® was packed up and sent straight to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to meet back up with James Clay for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. As you can imagine, “hill” is a bit of an understatement.
This race is nothing to scoff at. It has an elevation of 14,000 feet. It features 156 winding mountain turns, and it stretches for 12.42 miles. All of this takes place above the clouds with low oxygen levels, adding another layer of difficulty to the race.
Needless to say, James Clay showed his guts when he hit this track, topping out at speeds between 120 and 130 mph. “You need a battery that can keep up with the car,” Clay said. He ran a modern car, which pulls a higher demand from the battery than older models.
At Pikes Peak, James Clay clocked a 11:03 time and earned a 6th place finish, exceeding his team’s goal for the race. The battery was then pulled from the car and sent to face its next challenge.
