2018 Camaro Battery Location

The 2018 Chevy Camaro is an impressive car to be sure, but if you're accustomed to old school musclecars, this modern-day high-performance machine may have some surprises in store for you. One difference is the location of the battery on this car. While car batteries were long located under the hood in close proximity to the engine, many newer vehicles are moving batteries to other locations in the vehicle for a multitude of reasons.

In the 2018 Camaro, the battery has been moved to the trunk, specifically, behind the side panel on the passenger side rear corner. That doesn't exactly make for easy access, but there are several reasons the battery is back there. The 2018 Camaro has a front/rear weight distribution of about 54/46, helped by moving the battery to the very back and opposite corner of the driver. The interior location of these batteries do require that they be vented to the outside atmosphere, just in the unlikely event that they were to be overcharged.

These batteries tend to be larger and heavier than those found in the first several generations of Camaros, by about 12-15 pounds, but there's a reason for that. Modern vehicles are chock-full of all kinds of electrical demands, from satellite-based navigation systems, OnStar, car alarms, very robust stereo systems and other accessories that demand a lot from a vehicle's electrical system. Larger batteries tend to have more reserve capacity to power accessories with the engine off, as well as increased cranking power for engines that could feature a compression ratio of 11.5:1 or more.

Moving batteries to the trunk also helps keep them cooler than they might be, if they were located under the hood and much closer to the engine and exhaust manifolds, which can help extend battery lifespan. When the time does come for you to replace the battery in your sixth gen Camaro, we hope you'll consider the OPTIMA YELLOWTOP H6/Group 48 battery, which is a direct-fit replacement for your vehicle. If you buy it directly from us, we'll ship it to your front door at no additional cost!
