Ken Thwaits' 2006 Mitsubishi Evo RS
Will Ken Thwaits' 2006 Mitsubishi Evo recapture the Ultimate Street Car title in 2019?
Ken Thwaits has been competing in OPTIMA's Search for the Ultimate Street Car, presented by Advance Auto Parts, for as long as the series has been in existence (see more of his backstory here). The 2017 season proved to be the breakthrough year for Thwaits, as he finished second to Rich Willhoff in the Holley EFI GTL regular season points chase and went on to capture his first OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational title.
However, 2018 proved to be an even tougher challenge for Thwaits. Mike DuSold elevated his game significantly in his '67 twin-turbo Camaro and edged out Thwaits by a single point in the Holley EFI GTL points chase. DuSold followed that performance up with his first OUSCI title. It was a near-perfect performance and even though Thwaits' Evo ran strong in Las Vegas, it came up in third place overall, just 11 points behind DuSold.
As the 2019 season kicks off, Thwaits is signed up for all seven regular season events and will almost certainly return for another shot at the OUSCI title in 2019. However, he is registered to run two different vehicles this season, the Evo and a 2003 Corvette. As we've seen in past years, those plans may be fluid and may change as the season progresses. Regardless of what car he runs at which event, Thwaits will have to be considered one of the top contenders once again in not only the Holley EFI GTL Class, but for the OUSCI title.
