Can a Seaplane Land on Land?
As you can see from the gallery of images below, seaplanes come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and configurations. However, some folks wonder if seaplanes that are built to land on water can also land on land? The answer in almost every instance would be a resounding "yes," but most of those planes are considered "amphibious" planes, even though a non-pilot would call them a "seaplane." In an honest moment, most pilots might even generically refer to them as "seaplanes." Many of the photos below weren't taken at the Amphibian Base at the EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, but the Seaplane Base. Likewise, Tavares, Florida, bills itself as "America's Seaplane City," even though many of the planes found there are amphibious.
Pilots will also tell you any plane can land anywhere once, but taking off may be another issue. One example might be Howard Hughes' legendary Spruce Goose, the largest wooden aircraft ever built. The Spruce Goose only made one flight, where it took off and landed on water. It's in a museum now, unlikely to ever fly again and may not have been capable of landing on land, even if it could fly again.
So why is OPTIMA batteries spending time at the EAA Airventure in Oskosh, Wisconsin, taking photos of seaplanes? Well, for one, they're really cool. Another reason is that Oshkosh is practically in our backyard and we often have one of our big rigs at the show all week long. Even though our batteries are not certified for aviation use, we know just about everyone who can afford an airplane can probably afford a car or truck as well and we'd love to be their battery of choice for those vehicles. OPTIMA batteries can last up to three times as long as a traditional flooded lead-acid battery and they are up to 15 times more resistant to vibration than a flooded battery. In addition to automotive applications, OPTIMA batteries can also be found in a lot of ground support equipment at airports around the world, so we do spend a fair amount of time around airplanes.
