Smokey and the Bandit had made the Pontiac Firebird so popular, by the time the 1981 models were released, buyers had their choice of five different engines, including a turbocharged 4.9-liter V8 found in this Trans Am. The good news when it comes to batteries, is that OPTIMA offers direct-fit battery upgrades for every 1981 Firebird, from those equipped with the 3.8-liter V6 up to the 5.0-liter V8.

Most times, Firebird owners will have a couple options to choose from, like the Turbo TA owners. All of the batteries will have no trouble turning over any of the engines, so it really comes down to the choice between YELLOWTOPs and REDTOPs. The REDTOPs are great engine starting batteries and are an excellent choice for Firebirds that are still in OE .condition. The YELLOWTOPs might be a better choice, if your Firebird has been modified from an electrical standpoint.

Those changes could include an aftermarket stereo system, car alarm, dash cam or other significant accessory that may draw power from the battery, even when the car isn't running. In those instances, the YELLOWTOP will be the better choice.

Regardless of the battery you choose for your Firebird, the key to maximizing performance and lifespan is proper voltage maintenance. That means keeping REDTOPs topped off at ~12.6-12.8V and YELLOWTOPs at ~13.0-13.2V whenever possible. If your Firebird doesn't see daily use (and most don't these days), keeping it connected to a quality battery maintenance device will go a long way toward maximizing your battery ownership experience. We're so confident this is true, we'll add an additional year of free replacement warranty coverage to your OPTIMA battery, if you purchase an OPTIMA D1200+ charger from us, when you buy your OPTIMA battery.
