2016 Corvette Battery Size

The 2016 Corvette takes an H6 (Group 48) battery, like the OPTIMA H6 YELLOWTOP, which is a direct-fit upgrade for the OE battery. However, Corvette owners may notice the H6 YELLOWTOP is one of the heaviest batteries around at 54 pounds. So why would GM choose a battery that weighs so much in a sports car that might seem to benefit from lightweight components? Because Corvettes use A LOT of electricity, even when the engine is off.
As newer vehicles come with increasingly advanced features, the electrical demand has increase significantly. A 1976 Corvette could use a Group 75/25 REDTOP that only weighs about 33 pounds, but those cars are far more simple from an electrical perspective- no OnStar, no anti-theft systems, no key fobs that activate the onboard computer systems when they get close to the vehicle, etc... That combination of high electrical demand and infrequent use can quickly discharge any battery. If the battery is physically larger (and heavier), it will take longer to discharge than a smaller (lighter) battery.
