It doesn't seem like 2020 Ford F150 trucks have been on the road for five years, but anyone who bought a 2020 F150 before September of 2020 is now starting their sixth year of use on the road. If you ask AI how long batteries last, you may get an answer of three to five years. That would suggest if you haven't replaced the battery in your 2020 Ford F-150 yet, it will likely need to happen in the near future.

Get Your Battery Tested

You don't have to wait for the battery in your F-150 to leave you stranded. You can get it load-tested and get a really good understanding of whether or not the battery needs to be replaced. Most quality battery retailers will even offer this service for free. We would advise you to make sure your battery is fully charged to at least 12.6 volts before having it load tested, to ensure the most accurate result possible. If your battery does need to be replaced, many of these retailers will likely have a replacement battery in stock.

OPTIMA offers several options for 2020 Ford F150 owners when it comes to replacement batteries. OPTIMA's lead acid AGM batteries are the most cost-effective in terms of initial purchase price, while OPTIMA's lithium QH6 battery offers far more cycle life in a much lighter (34 pounds lighter) package. On the lead-acid side, more weight can generally be attributed to more active material and more power, whether that is starting power or reserve capacity.

Flooded lead-acid batteries are generally lighter and less expensive initially than their AGM counterparts and an increasing number of automakers are moving away from using flooded lead-acid batteries in vehicles equipped with start/stop technology. The reason is because start/stop engines require batteries to start engines thousands of times more over the life of the battery, a task for which AGM batteries are just better suited.

If you plan on holding onto your F-150, an AGM battery is a wise upgrade. If you're planning on trading it in or selling it soon, then saving a few bucks on a flooded lead-acid battery is a smart choice. If you do opt for an AGM upgrade, pay close attention to the battery weight. The size of the cases are all the same, whether you are comparing one H6/Group 48 battery to another or one H7/94R size battery to another (the H7/94R is physically larger than the H6/Group 48).

If you are paying for an AGM battery of a certain size, you should want to get the heaviest you can find, as more weight will typically equate to more power and more capacity. OPTIMA's DH6 YELLOWTOP is listed at just over 54 pounds and OPTIMA's DH7 YELLOWTOP is listed at 60.5 pounds. Either battery is considered a direct-fit upgrade for the 2020 Ford F150, with the DH7 being slightly more expensive, but offering more power. Both of those batteries come with three-year, free replacement warranties, while the ORANGETOP lithium QH6 (which is the same size as the DH6/Group 48) comes with a five-year, free replacement warranty.

There are some questions that come up with lithium batteries about what temperatures they can operate in and not all lithium batteries have the same operating range. OPTIMA's QH6 ORANGETOPs with HYPERCORE technology can operate in a temperature range of -40°F to 167°F. We understand many dashboard gauges show engine coolant temperature in the range of about 210°F, but keep in mind that is the temperature of the coolant inside the engine and not necessarily anywhere near the temperature found elsewhere under the hood of your F-150.

Extreme heat is the enemy of all batteries, so understand that if you live in a hot climate, like the desert Southwest or South Florida, your battery is not likely to last as long as it would in a more temperate climate, like San Diego. One thing you can do to maximize battery performance and lifespan is to keep your battery fully charged whenever possible. OPTIMA is so convinced this is true, we'll add an additional year of free replacement warranty coverage to your OPTIMA Battery, if you purchase an OPTIMA 1200 series charger from us when you make your OPTIMA battery purchase.
