OPTIMA is an enthusiast brand and we believe in powering the passion enthusiasts have for cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, UTVs or anything else that our batteries can get started for them! That list includes electric vehicles, many of which use 12-volt batteries for accessories.
In the book, The Last Child in the Woods, the author, Richard Louv, makes a compelling case for exposing young people to natural environments, asking how they are supposed to value a rain forest 2,000 miles away, if they've never been in the forest near their own home? We view an experience at King of the Hammers in much the same way. Access to public lands for responsible, recreational off-roading is not easy to come by these days, but there's a tremendous public resource available just a few hours from Los Angeles.
People who are into off-roading know how important it is to have access to these lands (and to use them responsibly), but what about folks who may live just a few hours away from Johnson Valley, but have never gone off roading before or never thought they could do that type of activity in an electric vehicle? Clarios and OPTIMA Batteries wanted to reach out to at least some of these folks and see if we could talk them into experiencing King of the Hammers in their EVs?
Coming into a new event can be an intimidating experience for some, especially if their outside perspective of that event is that "those aren't people like me" or "those aren't vehicles like mine." Clarios and OPTIMA Batteries did their best to create a welcoming community for these folks, while alleviating some common concerns- what about food, water, bathrooms, camping and charging vehicles?
Charging for the electric vehicles in attendance came from two trailers powered by renewable solar and hydrogen energy sources. In fact, that powered the entire OPTIMA Oasis complex. Participation in this event roughly doubled from the previous year and we look forward to inviting even more enthusiasts out for the next one, especially the first-timers. After all, there can never be too many advocates for the responsible use of public lands in the state of California and there are plenty of EV owners there to invite!
