The Ford F-450 comes with two batteries, whether the engine is a diesel or gas-optioned engine. Bigger engines sometimes require more cranking power and reserve capacity than one battery can offer. The good news is, OPTIMA Batteries offers direct-fit battery upgrades for the Ford F450! You can choose between OPTIMA's Group 34 REDTOPs or YELLOWTOPs to help run the F450, but which one is best?
If all you need are two batteries with plenty of cranking power, then the REDTOPs will be a great choice. However, if you run significant electrical accessories, like a snowplow, dash camera, winch, aftermarket stereo system or other demanding electrical accessories, then the YELLOWTOPs that are designed for both starting and deep-cycle use would be the better choice.
However, whether you choose REDTOPs or YELLOWTOPs for your F-450, the most important thing you can do with either set of batteries is to maintain proper voltage in them. Fully charged, our REDTOPs (and most other batteries) will measure about 12.6-12.8 volts and our YELLOWTOPs will measure about 13.0-13.2 volts. We recommend monthly use of a quality stand-alone battery charger, just to make sure proper voltage is being maintained in the truck, even if it is driven on a regular basis. If when you go to charge your batteries, you see that they have good voltage, you can expand that cadence. If you find they are constantly undercharged, you may need to use a battery charger more often.
The second most important thing you can do with your batteries is to make sure you replace them both at the same time. Anytime more than one battery is used in a series or parallel application, all of the batteries should be identical in three different ways- age, size and type. If you mix and match batteries, they will have uneven charging characteristics, which could significantly reduce battery performance and lifespan.
