OUSCI Preview- Todd Rumpke's 2010 Chevrolet Camaro
However, Todd did manage to make the fastest autocross pass in a fifth gen Camaro at Holley LS Fest, which was also an event where Danny Popp competed, so Todd is obviously making progress. The car itself bears a striking resemblance to the Lingenfelter L28 Camaro Popp will be piloting in the OUSCI this year and even shares some common modifications. Rumpke's power adder of choice is a Magnuson supercharger, mated with a custom-ground Comp cam, Kooks headers and a tune from Mike Norris. That combination is good enough for a hefty 635 horsepower and 581 lb-ft. of torque at the wheels. The suspension system has also been upgraded with the Pedders' Camaro Justice package and CTS-V front brakes, hidden behind Forgeline GA3R wheels.
Even though Todd removed the stock power seats in the interest of safety on the track, this is still a real street car, with air-conditioning and two Hot Rod Magazine Power Tours under it's belt. The Camaro also competed in the 2010 Silver State Classic Challenge open road race, where it averaged 109.918 mph in the 110 mph class, which was good enough for 12th place.
It may seem like Todd is living in Danny Popp's shadow, but Rumpke is an established driver in his own right, finishing in the runner-up position in this year's NASA Nationals in the TTU class at Mid-Ohio. We don't know a whole lot about Todd, but he is obviously a competitive guy, who real enjoys pushing cars to their limits. If that is the case (and we believe it is), we have a hard time believing Rumpke is going to show up in Las Vegas without some extra tweaks to his Camaro.
If that were the case, Rumpke would likely be in the minority in the OUSCI field, because as you read this, it is quite possible half the cars in this year's field (or more) are currently under the wrench, receiving last-minute tweaks and upgrades. As we regularly mention in these previews, last-minute mods can turn into a roll of the dice.
Even if everything goes together the way it is supposed to, sometimes loose parts or other minor tweaks that manifest themselves in testing rear their ugly heads at untimely moments during the OUSCI. Todd is an experienced driver and has obviously spent a lot of time behind the wheel of his Camaro, so if he is making additional upgrades, we expect he'll give himself enough time to sort them out before arriving in Nevada.
With that in mind, we'll take a look at how Todd thinks he'll do in this year's event. Having participated in other similar events, Todd knows the deal with the Detroit Speed Engineering/JRI Shocks Road Rally and will likely nab all the points he can there. We think his extensive road racing experience will also give him an edge in the BFGoodrich Hot Lap Challenge. We think he'll also likely perform fairly well in the RideTech Autocross, although Todd doesn't expect much love in the Lingenfelter Performance Design Challenge.
The Wilwood Speed/Stop Challenge can be a bit of a crap shoot, because an otherwise flawless run can be spoiled by a nicked cone or a little extra slide in the stop box. With only three opportunities to post a time, it will be interesting to see the strategy Todd and the other competitors employ. Will they go conservative in the first run, to at least get a time on the board and then push the envelope with each successive run? See the strategies unfold in person and buy your ticket today!">
