PowerPro Ambassadors Betim Berisha & James Clay Teams Compete in Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
BBi Autosport and BimmerWorld are teaming up with OPTIMA® Batteries to help power their vehicles for this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Beginning in 1916, the annual competition has only grown fiercer over the years with participants eager to take on the summit of the famous race track. As the competition continues to improve, the technology featured in the vehicles has evolved as well with teams looking for ways to increase their chances of winning the prestigious climb.
OPTIMA PowerPro Ambassador Betim Berisha will be taking on the Pikes Peak International Climb for the fourth time in a rebuilt Porsche GT3 Cup, which has been turned inside out in preparation. The 2015 911 GT3 Cup "TurboCup" Porsche now features a twin-turbo engine and custom aerodynamics. Fans won’t want to miss this!
This year’s rebuilt Porsche is piloted by Raphael Astier of team Romain Dumas. The car was built from the ground up in under 30 days, starting with just a rolling GT3 Cup shell. A new wiring and engine management system was installed, as well as a BBi HLLCLMBR spec engine. The engine is twin turbocharged with the new Garrett G-series G25-660 turbos and controlled with Turbosmart wastegates and blow off valves. A IPD plenum removes the bottleneck at the intake manifold and accommodates a large 82mm throttle body.
It has an all-new massive (33x11 inch) C&R Racing intercooler core, which the team mounted behind the engine, as well as new ducting through the rear decklid and out the back. The OPTIMA YELLOWTOP Battery has been dropped in to power the car’s electronic systems; this will help keep the car powered throughout the climb with a guaranteed start every time in any weather.
With a great need for down force - a massive Verus Engineering dual element wing was implemented. The wing will be mounted with bespoke CNC machined gooseneck-style mounts in turn to provide massive downforce to the rear of the vehicle with a new front splitter to help balance the chassis. Performance Friction Brakes helped overhaul the braking system with new rotors, billet caliper assemblies and special pad compounds. The team re-built and re-valved the shocks, then overhauled the fuel system with fresh XRP fuel lines and fittings – a flex fuel capability was also added. Engine management mapping was done with the help of Obsidian Motorsport Group and with DynoSpectrum tuning and adjusting on the mountain, dialing in the car with the just the right amount of power at any altitude.

OPTIMA PowerPro Ambassador James Clay of BimmerWorld and his team are bringing the twin to their No. 82 OPTIMA Batteries BMW M4 GT4. The vehicle is a regular in the IMSA Micheline Pilot Challenge championship and will be run congruently with the teams Watkins Glen race weekend 1,500 miles away in NY.
The car has a 3.0L turbo inline-6 engine with BMW Motorsport electronics and AIM data acquisition. The driveline is a 7-gear DCT with motorsport software. The 2018 BMW also has a motorsport differential with separate cooling. The suspension has motorsport-specific control connections along with 2-way adjustable dampers and adjustable motorsport anti-roll bars in the front and rear.
The wheels will be an 18-inch motorsport race wheel. Six-piston brakes with fixed calipers in the front and four-piston brakes with fixed calipers will be in the rear. There is also an adjustable brake bias via a balance bar.
