What is King of the Hammers? The Ultimate KOH Guide

Jim McIlvaine

In a sentence, the King of the Hammers, powered by OPTIMA Batteries, is the world's toughest one-day offroad race. However, it's really much more than that. From a racing standpoint, more than 770 teams compete in eight different races, but King of the Hammers is really what you make of it as a spectator or fan. Livestream coverage is extensive and fans are welcome to tune in with 2.5 million others to check out the action.

If you're on site, King of the Hammers can involve a whole lot more. We've experienced many aspects of it and while it spans over several weeks now, much of the action takes place starting on the weekend of the Toyo Desert Challenge and ending the following weekend with the signature race. In between those races are qualifying and a myriad of other races and events, including a variety of live music.

Since King of the Hammers takes place on BLM land, where there are no nearby hotels (or any other nearby permanent structures), many who attend King of the Hammers plan on camping out. While there are food vendors in and around Hammertown, plan on bringing some of your own food as well. The terrain in the area is unimproved, so bringing a four-wheel drive isn't mandatory, but it will certainly limit your movement if you don't. What clothes should you bring? Something for a range of 27F to 72F. Will it just be dusty or could it also get muddy? Yes.

If you want our biased opinion, one of the very best ways to experience the King of the Hammers, is to make the OPTIMA Oasis your base camp. However, access to the Oasis is restricted to sponsored racers and invited guests. How do you become an invited guest?

Historically, OPTIMA has hosted a Jeep Rally in conjunction with Jeep Jamboree USA, offering guides trail rides for Jeep owners. OPTIMA has also hosted the OPTIMA Unplugged EV Offroad Rally for hybrid and EV offroad enthusiasts. Sparky's Offroad Rally is also hosted out of the OPTIMA Oasis for Ford Raptor owners and of course, there's also Military Monday for members of our armed forces.

Several of these events include hosted meals and the opportunity to camp in the OPTIMA Oasis. While the Oasis doesn't have water or electricity for campers, it does have bathroom and shower trailers, which makes the Hammers experience significantly better, especially if you are bringing a significant other.
