What Type of Battery is Best for a Boat?
Boat owners now have more choices than ever for boat batteries with flooded lead-acid, AGM lead-acid and lithium batteries now widely available from retailers nationwide. Many of these batteries come with threaded terminals for marine (and RV) connections. With such availability comes choices as to which battery is best for a boat. While it would be nice to give every boat owner a single answer (and many brands that only sell one type of battery will try to do exactly that), the truth is, the best type of battery for a boat will depend on the boat and how it is used.
Flooded Lead-Acid Batteries
Flooded lead-acid batteries are often the least expensive option of the three types of technologies. That makes them an ideal choice for budget-conscious boaters, who are just looking to get their hull wet. Between the three technologies, flooded lead-acid batteries will typically offer the least cycle life and the shortest warranty coverage, so if this is a long-term purchase, upgrading to AGM or lithium may be the right move to make.
