Why Premium AGM Batteries are Still Preferred for Offshore Fishing Boats in 2026

Jim McIlvaine

When it comes to offshore fishing, there's usually some serious commitment involved. You're not just spending more time getting to your fishing spot and covering a lot more water. You're usually heavily invested in your equipment to make it all happen. If lithium batteries are the latest and greatest technology, why do so many offshore fishing boats still run AGM batteries?

Knowing Who is Who

The lithium battery space feels like the Wild West for a lot of people. New lithium brands seem to pop up out of nowhere, making incredible performance claims with little or no track record to back them up. Lithium batteries also present a new set of challenges for boaters and many don't know what questions to ask. Some brands will claim to use specific types of cells but make no mention of whether the battery IP67-rated against water intrusion or IEC-rated for safety at both the cell level and battery level (OPTIMA lithium marine batteries check all those boxes).

The premium AGM space is more familiar to many boaters and they know to ask if the batteries use 99.99% pure virgin lead (only a handful of AGM marine brands do, including OPTIMA). They know customer service and tech support can be reached through their local retailer or an 800 number, instead of an owners' group on Facebook, where other customers try to troubleshoot each other's problems.

Charging Compatibility

Unless a boat manufacturer specifically sets up a charging system on an offshore fishing boat to be compatible with lithium batteries, premium AGM batteries are the safe choice for compatibility with existing charging systems. While the robust Battery Management System (BMS) in OPTIMA lithium marine batteries allows them to handle a broader range of charging parameters, not every lithium marine battery can do that. Many outboards from Yamaha, Mercury and Suzuki were designed around lead-acid charging behavior and/or have specific requirements for lithium batteries that not every brand meets (OPTIMA's lithium marine starting batteries meet Mercury's 11/22 standards for lithium engine starting batteries).

Failure Tolerance

While lithium marine batteries can offer vastly superior cycle life to even premium AGM batteries, when they do stop working, there's not much in the way of warning signs. If you lose the engine starting battery on your boat 50 miles offshore, what are your options? If you have premium AGM batteries running a bow or stern thruster or in use as an engine starting battery for your generator, it's easy to grab one to get an engine started, even in parallel applications. Many lithium marine batteries are not designed or intended for use in engine starting applications and those that are shouldn't be mixed with non-lithium batteries.

Premium AGM marine batteries degrade more predictably and unless your lithium marine battery is capable of tracking cycle life (OPTIMAs do), how do you keep track of where your battery stands relative to the cycle life claims made by the brand?

Extreme Conditions

Offshore marine batteries are constantly moving with the boat, sometimes with significant pounding impacts. They live in a salty, wet environment, they're subjected to engine heat, long idle periods, heavy electronics loads and repeated starts. It takes a while to trust a battery in that environment and not everyone is in a hurry to make the leap into lithium, especially charter boats that are under pressure to provide the "perfect" experience for their clients.

Premium AGM batteries don't have an active BMS to trip offline, the continuous SPIRALCELL design in OPTIMA's AGM batteries results in fewer internal components, less failure points and better tolerance of harsh charging conditions.

Off Season Storage & Maintenance

Lithium batteries can struggle with charge acceptance in colder temperatures. While that may not matter much when the boat is in the water, it can be a problem when the boat is in storage. If a lithium battery gets completely discharged while in storage, can it be recovered from that state? If you chose an Internet-based lithium band, you'll probably need to check that Facebook group for community-sourced answers!

While deeply discharging premium AGM batteries is not an ideal scenario, recovering them is typically not beyond anyone's ability. Even if a premium AGM battery is discharged below a charger's minimum voltage threshold, wiring it in parallel with a second battery of good voltage will usually allow the charger to deliver current to the deeply discharged battery, until it reaches a suitable voltage level.

Lithium Does Have Clear Advantages

Don't let this blog convince you that lithium doesn't have advantages over lead-acid batteries, because it certainly does. Quality lithium batteries offer a significant weight savings over lead-acid batteries, although that may be more of a consideration in a flats boat than a 20,000-pound center console or an 80,000-pound sportfisher. Quality lithium batteries also offer exceptional cycle life, a flat discharge curve, faster charge acceptance and more usable capacity.

With so many positive attributes for lithium batteries, why do many offshore anglers still prefer premium AGM batteries? Because the "best" battery isn't always the lightest, newest or packed with the most technology. It's the battery that you have confidence will start your engines, power your electronics, survive abuse and get you home safely.
